How Mindset and Cognitive Skills Shape Better Learning

We think that meaningful education ought to enable students to do more than just complete tasks and get ready for an examination. It should help them to be active learners. This is where growth mindset learning comes in handy. If students see errors as part of learning, they may be more willing to practice, adapt their approach, and make another attempt.

In addition, there is a strong association with student cognitive development. Students approach their academic work with their use of memory, attention, reasoning, problem solving, and flexible thinking. In PEL Learning Centers, we design learning activities that help develop these skills in addition to Math and English Language Arts.

What Does It Mean to Teach Students How to Learn?

We feel it is important for students to know how they have improved. For instance, a student with a challenging math problem could learn to recognize the information given, choose a strategy, solve the problem, and check the answer. Truth is not just about discovering the right answer. It is about learning how to deal with problems.

This is the same with English. When a student writes a paragraph, he or she might need to first arrange ideas, and only then edit the grammar or sentence structure. There are opportunities for practice with thinking and communication at each step.

This is our growth mindset learning approach. We ask students to think more about strategies, practice, feedback, and improvement, and not think of ability as set. Other research indicates that growth mindset should not be viewed as a sure bet for academic success. The overall effects on academic achievement were small in size and did not become statistically significant when publication bias was accounted for in a systematic review of 63 studies.

This is a good reminder for us. While a positive attitude is key, it is best to go hand-in-hand with good instruction and regular practice.

How Does Cognitive Development Connect With Academics?

Student cognitive development occurs in many common activities of learning. Students apply working memory when they have to follow more than one instruction. They are flexible in their strategies. They self-regulate their attention to a task that is difficult.

The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard describes executive function as the ability to plan, focus attention, remember information, switch between tasks, and manage competing demands. These skills are acquired as a result of experience and practice.

This is why we don’t consider academic tutoring to be just more worksheets. We want students to consider the way they work, to identify errors and to make purposeful changes.

Can Math Practice Build Broader Learning Skills?

There are numerous opportunities in mathematics to develop structured thinking, and we believe that these opportunities are present. We have a Maths programme that allows the learners to practise what they are learning at their level. A Singaporean approach, which focuses on conceptual understanding and problem-solving, is also adopted. The typical student may need to read instructions about a problem, recall a rule, remember information, select a strategy, perform the calculation, and verify the answer for just one math problem.

We can encourage students to ask:

  • What does the problem ask me to find?
    • What information do I already have?
    • Which strategy should I use?
    • Does my answer make sense?
    • What can I change if my first strategy does not work?

These questions help make mathematical practice more purposeful.

How Can Students Learn From Mistakes?

We feel that errors can be informative when presented in a well-guided manner. When a student makes a mistake on a math problem, we can examine where the process turned around. If a reading response lacks an important idea, we can go back to the text and review the evidence.

This helps students to be able to view a wrong response as information, not as a conclusion. This is an important aspect of Growth Mindset learning. We do not say to students that hard work equals success. We want them to work hard and use good strategies, practice, feedback, and perseverance instead.

What are the ways we can support our students to be more self-reliant?

We do not want to make students need to be constantly assisted. We want them to be better able to handle academic challenges. The Harvard Center on the Developing Child research highlights the importance of practice and supportive experiences for developing executive function and self-regulation.

This can be facilitated by providing students with the opportunity to make a mistake, receive some feedback, and an opportunity to make it right and try again. These experiences can assist learners in developing an awareness of their learning and their learning styles over the years.
